This album was the piece of art that really gave me complete confidence in the value of what I do as a musician. You can be an artist all your life and really have no idea that you’re wanted or needed. Yet you make music anyway because you couldn’t stop if you wanted to anyway. That reality can become painful if no one takes notice. Or so you think. “The Meaning Of All Things” was a test of all of that. Artistically I did what I wanted to do. I spoke how I wanted to speak. I created how I wanted to create. I did all of this deliberately to see if anyone would listen. Would you still be interested if I continued to do my own thing?

Release Day?

The release date came in November of 2022 with a relatively favorable reception. Yet I could tell that this album was different. I could definitely feel that people were on the fence about it. Was it too frenetic? Too much? “I guess I’ll chalk this one up to a failed experiment”. That’s what I began to think to myself as sales began to slowdown. And when sales or attention for your music slow down……….; as an artist, the last thing you feel like doing is promoting the very thing that you perceive no one wants to hear. It’s a very debilitating feeling. And the crazy thing about it all is it’s often unwarranted. So, in spite of it all, I began to promote “The Meaning Of All Things” anyway. What else could I do? I figured that was a better option than pretending like it didn’t exist.

It Looked Different

1 year later, people began to slowly tell me that “TMOAT” was beginning to grow on them. That they found themselves listening to it more and more. 1 year later I learned that what I do is both truly wanted and needed. As a musician you can’t dictate how or when your music will be accepted. That’s not even your job, and you really shouldn’t even care about that. Your job; (my job) is to know without exception that what I do is mandatory.

All of the above caused me to substantiate this new revelation. So, one day I looked at the financials for “The Meaning Of All Things” Do you know that this album - that I thought was being ignored - has sold more than any of the 10+ albums that I’ve done to date? Everything that I thought about TMOAT and how it was being received was all in my head from the get go. It had nothing to do with reality. The success of the album didn’t look how I wanted it to, so I discounted any of its glaring accomplishments. There’s a time to be in your head. And a time to get out of it. And when I heeded this simple thing, I realized the following. People are listening. Even when you think they aren’t. They’re always listening to the things that are needed.
